Sofas

Every sofa here is made to order in our own Istanbul workshop, so the width is set to your wall rather than to a catalogue size. What you are really choosing is a shape and a set of proportions — and it is worth knowing which numbers decide the outcome.

Start with two numbers: back height and depth

Back height decides what the sofa does to the room. A low back — Oxford at 66 cm, Space at 67, Melanie at 68, Edinburg at 69, Nakita at 70 — leaves every sightline open, which matters when a sofa stands in the middle of an open-plan room rather than against a wall. A tall back such as Chelsea at 90 cm encloses you and becomes the thing you see. Depth decides whether the sofa fits at all: the range runs from 88 cm on Oxford to 105 cm on Liverpool, and those centimetres are the difference between a comfortable walkway behind a coffee table and a squeeze. Measure the room, then choose.

Chesterfield or contemporary

About half this collection is the English tradition — hand-tufted buttoning, scroll or dropped arms, hand-set nailhead trim, turned or castored legs. Charles, London, Chicago, Bristol, Nottingham, Emily, Cambridge, Jakarta and Edward sit here, and Chicago at 285 cm is the largest Chesterfield we make. The other half is drawn in plain volumes where the tailoring is the whole point: Nova, Agatha, Janette, Cesar, Charlie, Grant. The plain sofa is the harder one to build, because there is no detail to look at instead of the seat line.

The largest pieces

Manchester at 300 cm is our widest sofa and Julia at 290 cm the widest curve. At that scale, measure the delivery route before you measure the room: the piece has to turn your corridor corner and clear the doorway.

Materials

Kiln-dried beech frames; high-resilience foam over a sprung seat. Any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families — genuine leather only, no faux leather in any Sitdesign product — or fabric, and your own fabric (COM) is accepted, so a sofa can be matched to a bench, a bed headboard or dining chairs from the same batch of hide.

How ordering works

Send us the room: the clear wall width, the depth you can give to the sofa, and a plan with the door, the window and the television marked. We come back with the configuration, the material options and the lead time. Every piece is made in the company's own workshop in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul.
