Dining Chairs

Chair width is what decides how many people sit at your table, and it is the calculation almost everyone skips. Do it first; everything else about a dining chair is easier.

Do the arithmetic

Allow about 55 cm of table edge per person for a 50 cm chair and about 65 cm for a 60 cm one. On a 280 cm table that is five places down each side with Bellini or Echo at 50 cm, and four with Cameron at 60 cm or Cindy, Lopez and Suzanna at 61 cm. Delta at 55 cm, Mellow and Myra at 57 cm sit between the two. If you host, that difference is the difference between one table and two.

Arms, and the underside of your table

Arms make a two-hour dinner noticeably easier and are the usual reason a chair will not go under a table. Measure from the floor to the underside of your top and compare it with the arm height before ordering — a deep apron is where this goes wrong, and it cannot be corrected afterwards. On Rory the back curves round and becomes the arms, which keeps them low enough to clear a table that would stop a conventional armchair.

Back height changes the room, not the chair

Six backs around a table read as a row of panels. At 94 cm Mellow is the tallest and makes a screen that separates a dining area from a living one; at 84 cm Myra is the lowest and keeps the sightlines across the room open, which is what you want when a sideboard or a view sits behind the table. Suzanna at 83 cm is specified for board tables for the same reason.

Features that earn their keep

Cindy has a recessed handle on the back, so nobody moves a heavy chair by gripping the upholstery — which is what wears a chair out first. Lopez and Suzanna run on casters for hard floors where chairs move several times a day. Echo puts leather on the lower half, where a dining chair actually takes its wear, and fabric above where you lean. Mellow carries its leather strap on the outside of the back — the face the room sees when the chair is tucked in.

Materials and ordering

Solid wood frames; high-density foam that holds its shape under daily use. Any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families — genuine leather only — or fabric, with your own fabric (COM) accepted, so chairs can be matched to a sofa or a bench from the same batch. Send your table dimensions and the clear floor behind it, and we will say which chair fits. Made in our Istanbul workshop.
