MELLOW DINING CHAIR

Mellow has the tallest back we make at 94 cm, the shallowest seat at 50 cm, and a leather strap worked across the outside of the back. All three facts are connected.

The detail is on the side you actually see

A dining chair spends most of its life pushed in, which means the outside of the back is the face the room looks at — not the seat. The strap is there, on the back, rather than on the front where nobody sees it with the chair at the table. It is the same strap motif as the Bravo bench and the Ranger bed: hide stretches one way and not the other, so each strap is cut with the grain direction in mind and set out before it is fitted, because a strap applied over a padded surface cannot be nudged straight afterwards.

94 cm: a row of backs becomes a screen

At 94 cm these chairs stand clearly above the table. Six of them around a table read as a row of vertical panels, which is a real effect in an open-plan room — it separates the dining area from the living area without anything being built. It is also the thing to check first: a tall back is visible from everywhere, so it has to be the right side of the chair you want on show, and it will block a low sideboard or a view behind the table.

50 cm deep, 57 cm wide

The shallowest dining chair we make. It tucks almost completely under the table and needs less floor behind than any of the others — about 70 cm to pull out and sit. At 57 cm wide, allow around 62 cm of table edge per person.

Materials and sizes

57 × 50 × 94 cm. Solid wood frame with dark-toned legs; natural-textured fabric with a leather strap on the back. Any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families for the strap, and your own fabric (COM) is accepted. Genuine leather only. Handcrafted in our Istanbul workshop.

A dining area inside an open-plan room, a boutique restaurant, a café, a meeting room. In a low-ceilinged room a 94 cm back will feel tall — that is worth seeing in place before ordering six.
