In context

Ordinate sideboard with carved doors in a dining room

Ordinate carries a geometric carving across the whole width of the front — not a central panel, but a pattern that runs over all four doors. It is drawn in Anigre, walnut or oak, and the timber changes the piece completely. 244 × 47 cm, 77 cm high.

A carving that crosses four doors

A pattern that runs the full 244 cm has to survive three door gaps. The panels are carved flat and then hung, so the geometry has to be set out across the whole front before any cutting starts, and the hinge line has to be exact — a millimetre of drift on one door shifts the pattern against its neighbour and the eye catches it at once. The relief is also doing visual work: it is what makes a long, closed front read as a surface with depth rather than a wall of doors.

Three timbers

Anigre is fine-grained, light and almost golden, and it lets the carving read as shadow. Walnut is dark and strongly figured, so the pattern and the grain compete — striking, but busier. Oak is pale and open-grained and makes the same piece calm. On a carved front the choice matters more than on a flat one, because the grain runs across the relief.

77 cm

Below standing-work height, which keeps the top clear under wall art and makes the long carved front the thing you see. If you want to serve from the top, Merlin at 85 cm or Lavor at 90 cm is the better piece.

Materials and sizes

244 × 47 × 77 cm; made to order, with width, base — wood or metal — and the internal division set during the order. The pattern is set out again with any change of width so it stays symmetrical. Veneer and finish specified per project. Handcrafted in our Istanbul workshop.

Where it belongs

A dining room, a boutique hotel, a design-led residence, a prestigious office. The carving lives on raking light — light across the front rather than straight at it.
