MELLOW SIDEBOARD

Mellow is the plain one. Dark wood veneer, four flat doors, a bronze metal frame and legs, and nothing carved, patterned or inlaid anywhere on the front. 240 × 51.8 cm, 78 cm high.

Why a plain front is the harder one

A carved or patterned front hides small faults; a flat dark front hides nothing. Over 240 cm the four doors have to sit in one plane with no twist, the gaps between them have to be identical, and the veneer has to be matched so the grain runs continuously from one end to the other. There is no detail to look at instead. That is the whole proposition of this piece, and it is why we would rather you compared it with the others before deciding.

78 cm: a horizontal line

At 78 cm the top sits below standing-work height, so Mellow reads as a long low line rather than a working surface — the right height to go under a large picture or a run of art without crowding it. If the top needs to be used for serving, Orion shares the same body at 84 cm and Merlin at 85 cm.

One carcass, three different pieces

Mellow, Orion and Merlin are the same 240 × 51.8 cm body with three different fronts: plain with a bronze base, framed in structural metal, or carved at the centre. Mellow is the one to choose when the room already has enough happening in it — a patterned rug, strong art, a figured dining table.

Where it belongs

A contemporary residence, a dining room, a boutique hotel, an office. It is the background piece, which is a job worth doing well rather than a compromise.
