TWIST DINING TABLE

Twist is built around a patterned base. Where most dining tables have a plain support, this one has a worked surface — an intricate repeating pattern picked out with metal accents — under a plain wooden top, 240 × 105 cm.

The pattern is the piece

A repeating pattern across a base is unforgiving work: the repeat has to be constant, it has to meet itself correctly at the corners, and the metal accents have to land in the same place in every repeat. Done by eye it drifts, and on a dining table people sit looking at the base for the length of a meal. It is the slowest part of making this table and the only reason to choose it.

A plain top over a worked base

The top is deliberately flawless and undecorated. Pattern above and below would be unusable — a dining surface has to be flat, wipeable and quiet — so the whole decorative effort goes underneath, where it is seen when you sit down and forgotten when you eat.

How many it seats

240 × 105 cm seats eight comfortably — three a side, one at each end. At 105 cm it is slightly narrower than most of our tables, which leaves more walking room behind the chairs. Allow 60 to 65 cm of table edge per person.

Materials and sizes

Dimensions listed above; made to order, with length, width and height adjustable. The pattern repeat is re-set with any change of size so it stays even instead of stretching. Wood species, finish and metal tone specified per project.

Where it belongs

A dining room with a plain floor, a restaurant, a hotel. The base needs to be visible, so it is wasted under a heavy tablecloth or against a wall.
