TURTLE SIDE TABLE

A shell-shaped top that reaches out over its base — so the base tucks under the sofa and the surface comes to you.

In context

Turtle side table next to a sofa

Turtle is a small occasional table with a soft-cornered shell of a top, carried on a thin stem that rises from a solid upright base on a flat plinth. The top overhangs the base to one side rather than sitting centred on it — which is where the name comes from and what the table is actually for. Shown in a dark wood and in black.

The overhang is the design

Because the top reaches out beyond its base, the base can tuck under the edge of a sofa or a bed while the surface sits out over the seat, at hand height, with nothing underneath to catch a foot or block a cushion. That is something a centred side table cannot do: it has to stand clear, which puts the surface an arm's length away. Turtle puts the cup where the hand is.

A shell, not a disc

The top is a rounded, slightly uneven quadrilateral — corners pulled out and softened rather than a circle or a square. It has no sharp point to catch anyone passing, and the asymmetry means the table looks different from each side, so it reads as an object rather than a utility surface.

Stem and base

A slim column between a heavy base and a light top. The base is a solid upright block with rounded ends, standing on a thin flat foot that spreads the load and keeps the whole thing from tipping when weight is put on the overhanging edge — which is the one thing a cantilevered table has to get right.

Materials and sizes

Made to order in wood, in the finishes shown or any other. The height is the dimension that matters on this model, so tell us the arm height of the sofa or the mattress height of the bed it will stand beside, and we will set it to that.

Where it belongs

Beside a sofa, beside a bed, next to a reading chair, in a hotel room. It is a working table rather than a centrepiece — and it earns its place in rooms where there is no floor to spare for a conventional side table.
