Sign is a console drawn as a single sweeping line. The body curves through itself in walnut — T-Brown, a warm mid-brown — and at 103 cm it is the tallest console we make, which puts the top at standing height rather than at the height of a sofa back.
103 cm, and where that works
Console height decides the job it can do. At 103 cm Sign is a hall and entrance piece: the top is at the height you actually use standing up — keys, post, a lamp — and there is room for a mirror or a picture above it without the two crowding each other. It is too tall to sit behind a sofa, which is what most consoles are for; that is Akropolis or Olympos.
Only 40 cm deep
A corridor console has to be narrow enough to walk past. At 40 cm, Sign leaves a hallway usable — a piece 50 cm deep in a 1.2 m corridor makes it a squeeze for two people. It is the dimension to check before anything else.
Walnut, worked as a curve
The sweeping form is cut and shaped from solid timber rather than bent, which means the grain has to be read and followed as the curve turns — on a sculptural piece the grain direction is either part of the design or an obvious mistake. Walnut T-Brown is the finish shown; others are available to order.
Materials and sizes
128.5 × 40 × 103 cm as drawn; made to order, so width and height can be set to the wall and to what goes above it. Wood species and finish specified per project.
Where it belongs
An entrance hall, a corridor, a hotel lobby, a landing. It is a sculptural object as much as a surface, so it wants a plain wall behind it and light on it.
