SEMERKAND CORNER SECTIONAL SOFA

Semerkand has a wooden side table built into the sofa, joining the modules together. It is the detail that separates it from every other sectional we make: the table is part of the sofa, not standing next to it.

A table that is part of the frame

A side table placed beside a sofa drifts, gets knocked and never quite lines up. Built into the run of modules it cannot move, it sits at exactly seat-arm height so a cup is where your hand already is, and it fills the gap between two modules that would otherwise be a dead joint. The demanding part is that it has to carry its own load without relying on the upholstered modules — a built-in surface people lean on and set drinks down on has to be rigid and dead level, or the whole sofa feels unfinished.

Module sizes

Semerkand is specified module by module, and these are the drawn sizes: the corner is 148 × 148 cm and 74 cm high; the chaise longue 110 × 152 × 74 cm; an armless single seat 85 × 102 × 74 cm; the footstool 85 × 75 × 43 cm. Modules can be added or left out to suit the room, so the overall size is confirmed with your quotation rather than fixed here.

Wide seats, 74 cm back

The back stands at 74 cm — low enough to see across in an open-plan room, which is what you want from a sofa that often sits in the middle of a space rather than against a wall. The seats are wide and the back cushions are soft, so it is comfortable to sit at a conversational angle rather than only facing forward.

Left-hand or right-hand — settle this first

The corner is handed and cannot be swapped once made. Stand where you enter the room, face the sofa, and tell us whether the long side runs away to your left or your right; send a plan with the door, the window and the television marked.

Materials and sizes

Made to order. Fabric or leather — any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families — and your own fabric (COM) is accepted. The timber and finish of the built-in table are specified per project and can be matched to a coffee table or a sideboard in the same room. Handcrafted in our Istanbul workshop.

Where it belongs

An open-plan living room, a large apartment, a hotel lounge, a family room. Its logic is a long low line with a surface built into it, which suits a room that has to work without a lot of extra furniture.
