The Ordinate dining table stands on two pedestal bases cut through with a geometric lattice. The top is solid wood, 260 × 110 cm, plain and wide; the bases are the opposite — open patterns of cut-outs that let light and floor through.
Solid above, open below
That contrast is the design. A heavy wooden top on two solid blocks reads as mass; the same top on two pierced bases reads as a plane held in the air. The cut-outs also make the table far less visually dominant than its 260 cm suggests, which matters in an open-plan room where the dining table is seen from the living area.
Cutting the lattice
Every opening is cut to a drawing rather than carved, so the pattern repeats exactly on both bases and can be cut again years later to match. On an open lattice there is nowhere to hide: each internal edge is visible from both sides and has to be finished as carefully as the outer face. It is the slowest part of making this table.
How many it seats
260 × 110 cm seats eight generously or ten comfortably — allow 60 to 65 cm of table edge per person. The bases sit inboard of the ends, so the end places are usable and chairs can go anywhere along the sides.
Materials and sizes
Dimensions listed above; made to order, so the length is adjustable. The lattice is re-drawn to the new size rather than scaled, so the openings keep their proportion. Wood species and finish specified per project. The Ordinate coffee table and side tables share the same language, and the Ordinate sofa is drawn in it too.
Where it belongs
A contemporary dining room, an open-plan apartment, a design-led restaurant or hotel. The bases are the reason to own it, so it works best standing clear in a room where they can be seen.
