Olympos is 250 cm long — the longest console we make — and its front is made of wooden slats set at a regular rhythm against dark lacquered surfaces. Warm timber against a hard dark ground, in a repeating vertical beat along two and a half metres.
The slats
A run of slats is unforgiving: the spacing has to be constant along the full 250 cm, every slat has to sit at the same depth, and the shadow line between them has to be the same width from one end to the other. Set by eye it drifts, and a drift is obvious on a repeating pattern this long. The slats also break up a very long front, so the console reads as a rhythm rather than a wall.
73 cm: the height for behind a sofa
Console height decides where it goes. At 73 cm Olympos sits at about the back height of most sofas, which is where a console earns its keep: standing behind the seating in an open-plan room, carrying lamps and objects, separating the living area from what is behind it without closing off the view.
250 × 47 cm
Long and shallow — the proportions of a piece meant to run along a wall or behind a sofa, not to stand in a corner. At 47 cm deep it leaves the walking space behind it usable, which a longer, deeper piece would not.
Materials and sizes
Dimensions listed above; made to order. Wood species, stain and lacquer colour are specified per project, and the slat spacing is re-set with any change of length so the rhythm stays even. Handcrafted in our Istanbul workshop.
Where it belongs
Behind a sofa in a long open-plan room, along a dining room wall, in a hotel lobby, in an office reception. It needs length — in a short wall the proportions are lost.
