Mercury is a wingback with vertical channel stitching. The back rises to 98 cm and the sides come forward as wings, but instead of buttons the surface is divided into even vertical channels — which makes the chair read as modern rather than period. Slender at 82 cm wide. Shown in a warm leather.
Channels instead of buttons
Channel stitching is the one thing that separates this chair from every other wingback we make. Each channel is filled and sewn separately, and on a wing the channels have to follow a curve and still land at even spacing — the hardest version of this technique. The vertical lines also stretch the chair visually, so a 98 cm back looks taller and lighter than its height.
How the channels behave
Beyond the look, they stop the filling migrating sideways, so the back keeps an even surface instead of bunching where people lean. On a tall chair that is worth more than it sounds: a plain tall back loses its shape at shoulder height first.
Slim for a wingback
82 cm wide and 88 cm deep. Most wingbacks are broad — Masterchair is 88 cm, Denise and Saturn are wider still — and this is the one that fits a normal room while keeping the enclosing back.
Leather
Kiln-dried beech frame with high-density foam cushioning. Made to order in any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families, or in fabric. Genuine leather only. Leather colour, stitching style and firmness specified at the time of order; the channel spacing is re-set with any change of width.
Where it belongs
A modern reading corner, a hotel room, a study, an office. It is the wingback to choose when the room is contemporary and a tufted chair would look borrowed.
