MARS ARMCHAIR

Mars is a Chesterfield armchair at 68 cm high — the lowest chair in our range — on turned wooden legs with brass castors. Deep button-tufted back, curved enveloping arms, nailhead trim applied by hand, in full-grain leather with a hand-finished patina. Shown in black and in green.

Low, and compact with it

85 cm wide and only 73 cm deep, with a 68 cm back. Most Chesterfield chairs are built tall and heavy; Mars is drawn to sit under a window, beside a low table, or in a corner where a full-height chair would dominate. You sit back into it rather than upright, which is what the low back and the curved arms are for.

Brass castors

Turned legs with brass caster wheels — a period detail, and the most practical thing on the chair: it can be pulled across a room with one hand and turned to face a conversation without being lifted. They also lift the chair visually, which keeps a buttoned leather form from looking planted.

Patina, not a flat colour

The leather is full-grain and hand-finished, so the surface is shaded from the start — darker in the recesses of the tufting, lighter on the raised surfaces. That is why it looks like an old hide rather than a dyed one, and it means two deliveries of the same shade will not be identical. That is the nature of the finish, not a fault.

Construction

Kiln-dried beech frame. Buttons pulled and tied by hand over high-density foam, which is what holds the tufting square; nailheads set individually along the leading edges, where even spacing is the whole test. Made to order in any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families.

Where it belongs

A study, a cigar lounge, a hotel suite, an intimate seating corner. It pairs with our buttoned sofas — Jakarta, Edward, Evesham — and it is the chair to choose when the room is traditional but the ceiling is not high.
