JUPITER ARMCHAIR

Jupiter is a wingback. The back rises tall and the sides come forward as wings that close around the head and shoulders, with a tufted seat cushion and nailhead trim along the leading edges. Shown in cream.

What a wing is for

The wings were originally there to keep a draught off and hold the heat of a fire on the sitter. In a modern room they do something else: they cut the noise and the sightlines at head height, so a wingback in the corner of an open-plan floor becomes a genuinely private place to read. It is the one chair in our range that encloses you completely.

Why wings are difficult

A wing is a curved panel that has to meet the back and the arm at two different angles, and the leather or fabric over it has to be eased around that double curve without a pull mark — there is no tufting on the wing to hide one. The nailheads then have to follow the curve at even spacing; set by eye they wander, and on a wing the wander is obvious.

Leather or fabric

Deep, supportive seat over high-density foam, on a kiln-dried beech frame. Made to order in any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families, or in fabric, including a fabric you supply yourself. Genuine leather only. Tufting, stitching and cushion firmness specified at the time of order.

Sizes

80 cm wide. Please confirm the depth and height with us before ordering — a wingback is the one chair where the back height has to be right for the person using it. Everything is made to order, so it is set per project.

Where it belongs

A reading corner, a library, a boutique hotel room, a quiet end of an open-plan floor. In cream it is a formal piece; in a dark leather it becomes a study chair.
