Happy ends in a curve. One module at the end of the run is rounded instead of finishing in an arm, which changes how a long sectional behaves in a room.

A rounded end instead of an arm

An arm closes a sofa off: it tells you where the seating stops and you approach it from the front. A rounded end leaves that corner open, so you can sit on it facing any direction, walk past it without catching your hip, and put it in the middle of a room rather than against a wall. It also softens a long straight run, which is what stops a large modular sofa from reading as a wall of upholstery. The honest trade-off: there is nothing to lean against at that end, so the person sitting there has no armrest — which is fine as a perch and less good as the seat somebody takes for a whole evening.

High-resilience cushions

HR foam is the difference between a sofa that still looks like itself in five years and one that has settled into hollows. It holds its shape under daily use and springs back rather than compressing, which matters most on a modular sofa, because a sagging cushion in the middle of a long run is obvious against the ones either side of it. It is firmer to sit on than a soft feather-topped cushion, and that firmness is what you are buying.

Modular, and handed

Happy is specified module by module, so modules can be added or left out to suit the room and the overall size follows the layout. Which end the curve is on is a handed decision and cannot be swapped once made: stand where you come into the room, face the sofa, and tell us whether the rounded module is on your left or your right. Send a plan with the door, the window and the television marked.

Materials and sizes

Made to order; overall dimensions depend on the module layout and are confirmed with your quotation. Fabric or leather — any of seventy-six leather shades across twelve families — and your own fabric (COM) is accepted. Handcrafted in our Istanbul workshop.

Where it belongs

A large family living room, an open-plan space where the sofa divides the room, a lounge, a hotel suite. The curved end is the reason to use it where people walk past the end of the sofa rather than only in front of it.
