Grace is a wooden console drawn almost entirely in curves. The body flows rather than meets at corners, so the piece reads as a sculpture with a surface on top rather than as a case with shaped edges. 140 × 40 cm, 92 cm high.
Curves cut from solid timber
A flowing form in wood has to be shaped from solid stock, not bent, which means the grain has to be read and followed as the curve turns — on a sculptural piece the grain direction either belongs to the design or reads as a mistake. It also means there is no straight reference edge anywhere to check the work against; the shaping is judged entirely by eye and by hand.
92 cm: hall height
Console height decides where the piece goes. At 92 cm the top is at standing height, so Grace is an entrance, corridor or lobby piece, with room above it for a mirror or a picture. It is too tall to stand behind a sofa — Akropolis at 68 cm or Olympos at 73 cm is the piece for that.
40 cm deep
Shallow enough to leave a hallway walkable, which is the first thing to check in a corridor. The surface is a ledge for keys, post and a lamp rather than a working top.
Materials and sizes
Dimensions listed above; made to order, with width and height adjustable. Wood species and finish specified per project. Handcrafted in our Istanbul workshop.
Where it belongs
An entrance hall, a hotel lobby, a gallery or art space, a landing. It is an object before it is a surface, so it wants a plain wall behind it and light across it — in a dim corridor the curves flatten out and the piece is wasted.
